What ROAS Actually Looked Like in Our E-Commerce Accounts

Return on ad spend is the most quoted and least comparable number in e-commerce. Here are ours, with the margin question that decides whether any of them are good.

In short

Our best documented e-commerce return is 733% ROI on a Google Ads account: $21,542 in sales against $6,063 of spend across three months.

Whether that is good depends entirely on gross margin, and a ROAS quoted without margin attached is not a business result. It is a ratio.

The premium auto parts figure is the one that looks most impressive and needs the most context: $73,306 of sales value on a $1,000 monthly budget. Sales value is revenue, not profit, and on parts distribution the gap between those two is the whole business.1

The margin question

A 4x return on ad spend is excellent at a 70% gross margin and loss-making at a 20% one. This is not a subtlety; it is the difference between a campaign that funds the business and one that quietly drains it while reporting success.

Why we report cost per sale where we can

The automotive performance engagement is reported as 201 sales at $124.08 each rather than as a multiple. That is a deliberately less flattering way to present the same campaign, and a far more useful one: a cost per sale can be put straight against a unit margin, where a ROAS multiple has to be unpacked first.3
