Local SEO for a Dallas-Fort Worth Service Business

The metroplex is not one local market. It is dozens, joined by freeways, and a service business that treats it as a single city loses to the one that does not.

In short

Ranking in Dallas does not rank you in Plano, Arlington or Frisco. Proximity is a ranking input Google states plainly, and in a metroplex this spread out it dominates.

The practical consequence is that a DFW service business should be choosing which suburbs to compete in, deliberately, rather than targeting the metroplex and hoping.

Why the metroplex breaks the usual advice

Most local SEO advice is written for a city with a centre. Dallas-Fort Worth has two anchors and a ring of substantial cities around them, several of which would be the largest city in a smaller state. A searcher in Frisco looking for a plumber is not shown the same map results as a searcher in Arlington, and no amount of on-page work changes that.

Google is explicit that relevance, distance and prominence determine local results. Distance is the one a business cannot edit, which makes it the one that should drive the strategy rather than be ignored by it.1

What to do instead of targeting the metroplex

  1. 01Pick the suburbs you can actually serve profitablyDrive time from your base, not a list of city names. A ninety-minute job at a forty-minute drive is not the same business as one ten minutes away.
  2. 02Earn prominence where you already have customersReviews and mentions concentrated in the places you already work will beat thin pages about places you do not.
  3. 03Write a page per area only where you have something to sayTen near-identical suburb pages is a pattern search engines have been discounting for years, and a reader can spot it in one scroll.
  4. 04Treat the map listing as the primary assetHours, categories, photographs, services and current information. It outranks the website for the searches that matter most here.

What we would measure

  • Calls from the map listingSeparately from website calls. They behave differently and respond to different work.
  • Rankings by suburb, not by termOne average position across the metroplex hides everything worth knowing.
  • Jobs won by areaThe number that tells you whether the suburbs you chose were the right ones.
